What is Reiki? (A Deeper Look at Energy & Chakras)
Reiki is a Japanese practice rooted in the idea that life is supported by a subtle, underlying energy—often described as “Ki”, or life force. This concept is similar to qi in Chinese traditions or prana in yogic philosophy, all referring to the same idea: a vital energy that flows through living beings.
Rather than focusing on physical structures alone, Reiki is based on an energetic model of the human body—one that includes pathways, energy centers, and a dynamic flow of life force.
The Human Energy System
In Reiki philosophy, the body is understood as an interconnected energy system made up of:
Energy channels (often called “nadis”), which act like rivers or streams carrying energy throughout the body
Energy centers (chakras), which regulate how this energy is received, expressed, and balanced
This system is not visible in a physical sense, but is described as a framework for understanding emotional, mental, and spiritual experience.
What Are Chakras?
The word chakra comes from Sanskrit and means “wheel” or “vortex.” Chakras are described as spinning centers of energy located along the spine, from the base of the body to the top of the head.
There are seven primary chakras, each associated with different aspects of human experience:
Root – grounding, safety, survival
Sacral – emotion, creativity, pleasure
Solar Plexus – identity, confidence, personal power
Heart – love, compassion, connection
Throat – communication, expression
Third Eye – intuition, insight, awareness
Crown – consciousness, connection to something greater
These energy centers are often described as working together as a unified system—like instruments in an orchestra—where balance across the whole system is key.
Energy Flow and Balance
Within this framework, well-being is associated with the smooth and balanced flow of energy through the body.
When energy flows freely, a person may feel clear, grounded, and aligned
When energy is described as “blocked” or imbalanced, it may correspond to feelings of stress, fatigue, or emotional difficulty
Each chakra is thought to both influence and reflect different aspects of life—emotional, psychological, and spiritual—creating a bridge between inner experience and overall well-being.
Where Reiki Fits In
In this model, Reiki is not seen as the source of energy, but as a way of working with the body’s existing energy system.
It is often described as:
A method of connecting with universal life energy
A way of supporting the natural flow of energy through the chakras
A practice that allows the system to return to balance in its own way
Some traditions describe it simply:
If the chakras are the centers, Reiki is the current that flows through them.
In Essence
Reiki offers a way of viewing the human being not just as a physical body, but as a dynamic field of energy, awareness, and connection.
At its core, it invites a simple idea:
When energy flows freely, we feel more like ourselves.
