Congratulations on completing Reiki 1! Welcome to Reiki II. Today we will be advancing the type and proficiency of Reiki healing treatments with the introduction of different methods and use of symbols to focus Reiki energy. We will look at three main symbols to allow the giver to access healing energies immediately, give absent / distance healings, and be able to soothe emotional and mental ailments as well as physical. As before, please take notes so the teacher can answer any questions you have during the session.
Symbols of Traditional Reiki
For Reiki II
Cho-Ku-Rei – An empowerment symbol
Sei-Hei-Ki – The mental/emotional symbol
Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen – Transcending space & time
Cho-Ku-Rei – An empowerment symbol
Pronounced – Cho – Koo – Ray / /
Translation – I command the universal energy
Colour – Red
Element – Fire
The result of using this symbol in a clockwise direction is as follows
Activates the universal energy (similar to a light switch) in a controlled, efficient manner. This allows the Reiki II Practitioner to access this specific energy immediately, rather than waiting for the energy to arise naturally as in Reiki 1.
Controls the strength of the energy required- as an amplier or reducer.
Acts as a protector by locking in wanted energy and removing unwanted energy.
Helps to activate and lock in energy of other symbols.
Is a symbol linked with the pysical body
Cho-Ku-Rei
(Clockwise)

Cho-Ku-Rei
(Anticlockwise)

The result of using this symbol in an anti-clockwise direction is the the body / space is cleared of negative energies. Removes inflammation of the physical body.
Do not intentionally use this symbol during a treatment, but if during the healing Cho-Ku-Rei is used anti-clockwise, do not correct it, trust that this form was necessary for that specific location.
When clearing a room of negative energy, stand in the centre of the room and draw the anti-clockwise symbol facing each of the four directions (either four walls, or corners).
When in Southern Hemisphere- traditionally the symbols are used in reverse, ie. anticlockwise (in), clockwise (out).
Sei-Hei-Kay – The mental / emotional symbol
Pronounced – Say-Hey-Kay //
Translation – I have the key
Colour – Blue
Element – Water
This symbol is used for healing mental & emotional problems. Usual results of using this symbol are :
Relaxes the client, so that they receive most benefits from the Reiki treatment.
Releases suppressed emotions and trauma. Effective in the treatment of depression, anger, sadness, addiction etc.
One of the first reactions of the client is that they become less anxious about an ailment. This helps greater acceptance of their condition, which helps the client to contribute positive energy rather than negative energy to the area. This helps to maximise and speed up recovery from an ailment.
Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen – Transcends space & time
Pronounced – Hon-Sha-Zey-Sho-Nen //
Translation – The Buddha in me sees the Buddha in you. No past, no present, no future.
Colour – White / Violet.
Element – Air
Essential when sending absent / distance healing because the symbol allows energy to transcend space and time. This symbol is needed to bring healing to the past, present, and future.
It is said to give access to the person’s Akashic Record, the journey of each soul / spirit and is important in healing karma.
The Reiki Practitioner is instrumental in healing ailments caused by events throughout all of the soul’s lifetimes, therefore providing healing will have an effect on the future path chosen by the client.
For example if the client has a passion for gardening but suffers from pain in the knees – to relieve the client of the pain would change the client’s attitude towards their future (future karma).
Similarly past life trauma can be explored which may cause ailments in the present. Healing old trauma created during the soul’s journey can have positive effects to both the client’s health and attitude for the future.
NOTE: Akashic Records are said to be a record of the soul’s goals, debts, contracts, and life purpose in each of it’s many lifetimes- past / present / future.
Using the Reiki Symbols
As always preparation for a healing session is essential and must be followed for a successful treatment. The preparations are as follows.
G – Grounding.
C – Cleansing of Physical body & Aura.
P – Protect yourself.
O – Open up the chakras.
Then, after moving client into a comfortable position,
P- Permission seeking -ask permission to heal from client’s higher self
When if asking permission there is no clear response or sign not to give the treatment then start the treatment forming a bond between you and the client. We can do this by imagining a temporary cord or a figure of eight (8) of blue light connecting / channelling energy from you to the client.
MAKE SURE TO MAKE A MENTAL STATEMENT THAT ENERGY CAN’T FLOW FROM THE CLIENT TO YOURSELF AND THIS TEMPOARARY CONNECTION IS BROKEN WHEN THE ENERGY HEALING IS FINISHED.
Start the healing by sitting next to the client, and drawing the symbols – either with your hand or in your mind / imagination.
1> Draw a clockwise Cho-Ku-Rei symbol to start the flow of energy.
2> Draw the Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen symbol to allow healing over space & time.
3> Draw a clockwise Cho-Ku-Rei to lock in the energy.
>Start by brushing down the body/aura as described in Reiki 1.
Continue with the hand positions for healing we looked at in Reiki 1.
EVERY TIME- we move hands to a new position – DRAW a new Cho-Ku-Rei symbol to allow healing energy channelling to the new body position. APPLY to all new body/hand positions, front, back and limbs.
When drawing the symbols with your hand or in your mind/imagination. Draw the symbol once AND mentally SAY/REPEAT the name of the symbol 3 times
START WITH HEAD
When channelling energy to the HEAD we follow different steps.
SIT ABOVE CROWN OF HEAD.
1> Draw Cho-Ku-Rei symbol.
2> Draw Sei-Hei-Ki symbol.
-for mental/emotional healing.
3> Draw Cho-Ku-Rei symbol.
-to lock in correct energy.
Some healers and with practice giving treatments may gain intuitive sight.
They may receive images and messages during treatments that may highlight areas & causes of emotional/physical ailments.
These abilities develop with time & practice.
During the head channelling treatment the healer can mentally ask the following questions and may receive mental messages. As healers we can mentally tell the client’s HIGHER SELF to allow healing on a level of soul/spirit.
1. Hands placed over eyes –
What would the client like to see?
2. Hands placed on temples / cheeks –
What would the client like to feel?
3. Hands placed over ears –
What would the client like to hear?
4. Hands on back of head –
What would the client like to know?
Not every healer wishes to gain this skill - however the practitioner should ask their higher self to convey this information during the healing. An example may be that the receiver may want to see a relaxing natural environment. This could suggest that the client is spending too much time indoors and is not able to get out into nature as much as their should would desire. Sometimes the client might like to hear their favourite music or see / feal reassurance of a loved one. Sometimes a certain ailment might be highlighted allowing for more acceptance of the ailment. It is important to be careful when relaying such information, if the messages are not clear and it could cause potential harm to the client the practitioner should withhold any information and act purely as a channel for healing.
5 Major Differences between Reiki I and Reiki II
As a consequence of using the Reiki Symbols
The required strength of healing energies can be accessed immediately when the symbols are drawn
The healer can directly target emotional and mental issues (Reiki I primarily deals with the physical body)
The healer has the tools and methodology needed to give distance / absence healing.
The healer if (they wish) can receive information about the nature / source of the ailment being suffered by the client
Information about what the client would like to see, hear, feal and know can be requested to the client’s higher self and conveyed to the client’s consciousness
All of the steps involving symbols and intuition will be done silently / mentally and is a negotiation between the practitioner and the client's higher self. Only convey information received directly to the client if they welcome such feedback.
Since Reiki energy flows where it is needed, the time spent in each hand position may become shorter with practice. This does not make the treatment weaker. The practitioner should stay in each position until the energy feels complete. Over time, many practitioners naturally develop a feeling for when it is time to move to the next position.
In Reiki Level 2, the practitioner learns to work more directly with Reiki energy through the use of symbols. These symbols help focus the energy for different purposes. This gives the practitioner more awareness and control than in Reiki Level 1.
Sei-Hei-Ki is known as the emotional and mental symbol. It is used to support balance and harmony in the emotions and mind. Emotional and mental stress can affect the body over time, so working with this symbol may help support overall wellbeing.
Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen is the symbol connected with distance healing. It is used when sending Reiki across distance, beyond normal limits of space and time. This practice is often called distance healing or absent healing.
With experience and practice, some practitioners may begin to notice intuitive information during a session. This can relate to a person’s emotional, mental, or physical state. However, it is important to be careful and respectful when sharing personal insights. Information should never be forced onto someone, and practitioners should avoid making strong claims about the cause of illness or health problems.
Absent / Distance and Past Life Healing
Sometimes the practitioner and receiver cannot meet in person because of distance or other practical reasons. In these situations, Reiki can still be shared through a method called distance healing, also known as absent healing.
During a distance healing session, the practitioner may use a “proxy” object or “proxy body” to represent the receiver. This helps the practitioner focus their intention while sending Reiki energy across distance.
The “proxy body” is used to represent the receiver during a distance healing session. The practitioner works with it as if the receiver were physically present.
As with in-person Reiki, the healing energy is only accepted if the receiver is open to receiving it. If the practitioner is unsure, they can still send the Reiki. The energy will only be received if it is needed and accepted, and Reiki is believed to do no harm.
During the session, the practitioner may check whether different parts of the body or energy centers need support or balance. The same methods used in an in-person session can also be used in distance healing.
Practitioners may notice signs such as:
Warmth, cold, or tingling in the hands
A natural feeling or intuition about a certain area
Using a tool such as a pendulum
Before beginning any healing session, it is important to prepare properly. This may include:
G – Grounding
C- Cleansing
P- Protection
O- Opening the chakras
P- Asking permission
These steps help the practitioner prepare mentally, emotionally, and energetically for the session.
In distance healing, asking permission is done a little differently than in an in-person session. You can follow these steps:
* Place your hands in front of you, with your palms facing each other. Keep them about 25 cm (10 inches) apart and about 25 cm (10 inches) away from your body.
* Quietly say the name of the person you wish to help. Then make an offer for them to receive Reiki healing.
Repeat this three times.
* Pause for a moment and notice if you receive any feeling, thought, or intuition. You may feel that the healing is accepted or not accepted. If you do not receive a clear answer, you may continue with the session.
* Place the proxy object or proxy body on a pillow or comfortable surface in front of you.
Then:
Introduce yourself and explain that you are about to give Reiki healing
Explain that the chosen object will act as a proxy for the receiver
Mentally connect the receiver with the proxy object
Begin the Reiki session in the normal way
Commence the treatment in the usual way
Trace the Cho-Ku-Rei symbol over the thought form/proxy.
Trace the Hon-Sha-Ze-Sho-Nen symbol over the thought form/proxy.
Trace the Cho-Ku-Rei symbol over the thought form/proxy.
The effectiveness of distance healing can be explored through practice and experience. Some practitioners choose to work with people they can later speak with or check on after the session.
Reiki absent healing is very powerful and effective therefore distance healing should be treated with the same care, focus, and respect as an in-person Reiki session.
At the end of the session, the practitioner may take a moment to mentally close the connection with the receiver and the proxy object. Some practitioners may then check intuitively, or with a tool such as a pendulum, to feel whether the session is complete.
For many people, distance healing can feel less familiar or harder to understand than in-person Reiki. Because of this, confidence usually grows through regular practice and personal experience.
Training courses include time to practice distance healing so students can become more comfortable with the process.
Use of Pendulums - video tutorials available on Youtube.com
Cleansing the Space

Swing th pendulum from side to side and up and down to purify and cleanse a space
Checking and Balancing Chakras

Hold the pendulum over each chakra to check for balance and flow.
Use it to identify if areas may need healing
Scanning the Aura / Energy Body

Move the pendulum around the auric field to detect blockages, weak areas, or energy leaks
Testing Treatment Positions

Use the pendulum to check which body locations / hand positions are most needed / effective for the receiver
Monitor Energy Flow During the Session

Check if energy is flowing smoothly and if receiver is responding positively to the session
Closing and Confirming the Session

Ask if the session is complete.
Confirm if further healing is needed.
Close the session with clarity & gratitude.
Past Life Healing
Reiki healing is believed to work beyond the physical body. It may also help heal deeper energy connected to the soul’s journey, including experiences and karma from past lives that may still affect a person in this life.
Sometimes, after several distance healing sessions, the practitioner may feel that a problem has a deeper spiritual cause. In these cases, the practitioner may choose to direct Reiki toward a past life or karmic pattern connected to the issue.
* To do this, the practitioner follows the normal distance healing process.
* After connecting with the receiver’s thought form, the folling should be added:
* “I ask to connect with the past life or karmic experience linked to this symptom.”
The Reiki session then continues as normal. The practitioner may also ask for old energy, fear, trauma, vows, or karmic patterns connected to the issue to be released with love and healing, for the receiver’s highest good.
The purpose is not to force change, but to allow Reiki energy to flow where healing is needed most.
At the end of the session, the practitioner gently releases the thought form and closes the connection in the usual way.
Congratulations! We've completed the practical methods and techniques used in Reiki Level II. I hope you continue to practice and enjoy giving Reiki healing using the symbols, it is especially important to practice absent healing to build confidence as a Reiki Healer. Below is more information about the concept of past lives and karma which may be interesting and popular with your average client. It will also help to increase your understanding of how absent healing works and how karma and the chakras play a part in spiritual healing and development. I hope you enjoyed Reiki Level II, wishing you good luck and love on your journey.
Reincarnation and Karma
What is Reincarnation?
Why do we Reincarnate?
What is the end objective?
How can we achieve the end objective?
Why did we Reincarnate originally?
Reincarnation and the Bible.
Is there proof of Reincarnation?
What is Reincarnation?
Reincarnation is the idea that we live many lives, not only one.
“We” means the true essence of who we are — the Soul or Spirit. The Soul or Spirit gives life to the physical body and keeps it alive.
“Live” means that the Soul or Spirit is eternal, but the physical body only lives on Earth for a limited time. Because of this, the Spirit takes a different physical body each time it incarnates on the Earth plane.
Children born to the same parents may have similar physical genetics, but each person has their own unique Spirit. Each Spirit is a small part of the Universal Energy.
Why do we Reincarnate?
The Spirit incarnates to learn, grow, and become more pure and balanced. Complete harmony may not be reached in one lifetime on Earth, which is why reincarnation is believed to happen.
Although we are part of the Universal Energy or God, it is believed that God already exists in complete harmony and perfection.
Some believe because we are part of God then if God is not perfect, through us, God trying to attain perfection.
Human beings, through the journey of the Soul, continue to learn and grow toward greater harmony and understanding.
This idea leads to the concept of KARMA
Karma
Karma is the Universal Law of cause and effect, or action and reaction.
In simple terms, it means that our actions create effects or consequences. Positive actions may create positive results, while harmful actions may create suffering or imbalance.
It is believed that if a person creates imbalance during one lifetime, and this is not balanced through learning, growth, or positive actions, the Soul may return through reincarnation to continue its journey toward balance and harmony.
Because of this, the journey of the Soul may continue through many lifetimes.
What is the End Objective?
The end objective as indicated previously, is to purify the Spirit.
The main goal of the Soul’s journey is believed to be the purification and growth of the Spirit. This means moving toward balance and harmony with Karmic Law.
Because of this, we try to bring balance to our actions, thoughts, and choices.
Past lives can be seen as early stages in the growth of the Spirit. Each lifetime is like a new school where the Soul learns lessons and gains experiences, both good and bad.
If we accept this idea, we may begin to see difficult times in a different way. Instead of only resisting them, we can also see them as opportunities to learn, grow, and move forward.
In the same way, good experiences can be accepted with gratitude as part of the Soul’s journey toward greater balance and understanding.
How can we Achieve the End Objective?
In their teachings, Krishna, Jesus, and Buddha spoke about the purification of the Soul through self-discipline, sacrifice, and learning not to become too attached to the temporary world around us.
Krishna taught that freedom can come through releasing attachment to actions and outcomes. For many people, this can be difficult in everyday life. A simpler approach is to try to do good actions with kindness, without ego, and without expecting rewards.
It is also believed that both good and difficult experiences can contain lessons and balance.
For example:
A very difficult day may feel bad
Feeling relief when it ends may feel good
Wishing life was always easy may create new suffering or attachment
This reminds us that life is always moving between different experiences, helping us learn balance and understanding.
Why did we Incarnate Originally?
If our Spirit is part of the Universal Energy or God, many people ask an important question:
“If God is perfect, why does the Soul need purification and growth?”
This is a deep spiritual question, and there is no simple answer. Different people and traditions understand it in different ways.
Some possible ideas are:
Perhaps the Soul grows and learns through experience over many lifetimes
Perhaps life on Earth is a place for learning, testing, and spiritual development
Perhaps the journey itself helps the Spirit gain wisdom, understanding, and compassion
One idea is that the process of growth and purification helps move the Soul toward greater harmony and balance.
Another idea is that the Soul already comes from a perfect source, but still passes through many experiences in order to learn and evolve.
Both ideas suggest that life experiences — both joyful and difficult — may have meaning and purpose within the larger journey of the Spirit.
At the same time, these are spiritual beliefs and possibilities. No one can know with complete certainty which explanation is fully true.
Is there Proof to Reincarnation?
Many books and stories talk about reincarnation and past lives. Some well-known cases come from India and other parts of the world. However, not all of these stories have been proven, and some have been questioned or challenged.
One well-known book on this subject is:
Many Lives, Many Masters by Brian Weiss
In this book, Dr. Weiss describes his work with a patient named Catherine. His original goal was to help her understand the cause of several strong fears and physical symptoms.
These included:
Fear of water
Choking sensations
Fear of flying
Fear of the dark
Fear of dying
While using hypnosis and regression techniques, no clear cause for these fears was found in her current life.
Later, during deeper regression sessions, Catherine described experiences that she believed came from past lives.
According to the book:
Fear of water was linked to drowning during a tsunami
Choking sensations were linked to a throat injury in battle
Fear of flying was linked to dying as a pilot during war
Fear of darkness and death was linked to living in isolation with illness
She also described experiences between lifetimes and spoke about meeting the same souls in different lives, sometimes in different roles and relationships.
The book suggests that difficult or traumatic experiences may leave strong emotional patterns that continue across lifetimes. It also raises the idea that some life experiences may have a deeper purpose in the growth and learning of the Soul.
These ideas are spiritual and personal beliefs, and different people may understand or interpret them in different ways.
If you believe in Reincarnation or not, my thoughts are this: Karma is a force that will effect us directly in this lifetime. Often disease and ailments are the result of stress that is held in side the body and not released. Stress can come from, anger, guilt or resentment of past events, or anxiety and worry about the future. To open the Chakras we need to shine a light on these emotions and release them and make good decisions/actions with loving intention towards our community- this will stop the accumulation of bad karma for the future. I would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and beliefs. Please share them with me after the session.
